Shape and Structure of Castle

I visited Matsumoto Castle on December 10th, when they had alreay begun to make the new-year preparation. I walked around its inner garden and the main tower-complex.
Then the sky was covered thick clouds and the the Alps mountains were hidden by them. If it was fine I could take a look of their beautiful shapes westwards.
In the picture above the rope-works, in the conic shape, over the trees were Yukitsuri which were made to prevent the trees from beeing broken by sonw-weight.
As Matsumoto Castle was the oldest one that the main tower was constructed in the Tower-stairing architecture, the form of its tower is the most primitive in the early modern.
The architecture type was developed in the last phase of the war-age, spacialized for a military purpose, in contrast with the Watcing-tower type.

Let's get into the main tower-complex to investigate its inner structure and walk around the garden.
The Watcing-tower type is the structure in which a watching tower is piled on a huge gabled roof. In the Tower-stairing architecture similar sthape stairs are overlaied upward.

◆Main Tower-Complex◆

The picture on the left side shows us the outer and the inner structure of Matsumoto Castle.
The feature most characteristic of it is that the main tower-complex has a very cohesive structure.
That is, they built a small side-tower named Inui-kotenshu on the northwest-side of the main tower and connect them with a short corridor, moreover they annexed Tatsumiyagura, i.e. the side-tower on the southeast-side, and Tsukimiro, i.e. the moon-watching turret.
They are standing so cohesive within a narrow site that they look like forming a one body.
That main tower are standing a very narrow base (infrastructure) let us feel it soaring into sly so sharp. The structure has a simpleness without useless decorations.

◆Kuromon and Honmaru garden◆

The day I visited the Honmaru, though it was rahter warm for winter, almost leaves of trees had already fallen down. Then I could see clearly the shape of the main tower-complex.
The sides of the main tower, the side-towers, turrets, and the gates are covered with mud-walls, window-racks and shutters lacqured in black. Also the rooves in black. Therefore some people call it Crow Castle.

Getting into Honmaru through Kuro -mon, i.e. the black gate and Masugata -koguchi, I found the lawn-leaves already withered by hard frost.
In the garden they had begun to make a preparation for a new year since late autumn. They were very busy in December. All branches of pine trees are sustained by the rope-works of cone-shape to avoid snow-damage.

In such a desolate garden a young lady appeared in Japanese princess costume. She weared gorgeous Kimonos with brilliant decorations and had a red umbrella in her hand.
Soon she was encircled by many people having cameras. Most of them are men in early old age. They took pictures of the lady earnestly. She was one of staffs welcoming so kindly the visitors in such a way.

◆Getting into Tower-Comples◆

At entrance we had to put off our shoes and on slippers.
It is rather gloomy in the tower as there are no skylight-windows. Then we have to walk depending on guiding lights.
For main tower is a military apparatus for a warfare, it has no elbowroom. Then all stairways are very steep. It means that the tower has a narrow base area but a tall stature.
Therefore it has so many pillars, most of which penetrate tree stairs, to sustain its heavy weight.

◆Shining Floors◆

But everywhere in it floor-bords are shining under the so weak light. It is because of very careful maintainance.
So many young boys polish the floors thoroughly by duster-clothes wrapping walnut-oil cores every year. The plant fruit oil is the most adequate wax to conserve the wooden floors.

Down side of the top-stair roof

A young lady staff in princess costume came in the garden. She was very popular for people taking pictures. By the way the entrance is the basemant of bridge-turret between the main tower and side-tower over there.
